What is Bodhidharma? Does Bodhidharma really exist?
Bodhidharma, translated as Enlightened Dharma, Indian, (~470 – 543). Bodhidharma is the last of the 28 generations of Zen Patriarchs of India and is the Patriarch who has made great contributions to bringing Zen to China and other Eastern countries such as Vietnam, Japan, and Thailand.
He is considered the spreader and founder of Zen and Martial Arts to China. According to Chinese legend, he imparted physical training methods to Shaolin monks and led to the formation of Shaolin martial arts. He is also the father of Chinese Zen Buddhism.
What is the real story of Bodhidharma?
Bodhidharma was originally from India. He was born 1002 years after the Buddha entered Nirvana, and he lived 112 years old. Bodhidharma was the 3rd Prince of Huong Chi nation, naturally very intelligent and eloquent, no one could surpass him.
Legend has it that Prajnadhara, the 27th Patriarch of the Buddhism, once came to Huong Chi country and was invited by the King of Huong Chi country to make offerings to his grandfather’s death anniversary. Prajnadhara heard that Bodhi Da La was a peerless reasoner, so he intended to test his intelligence. The realized that Da La had very different thoughts and manners, so he invited Da La and the two brothers to also sit and discuss the word “Heart”.
Seeing that Da La was still young at that time but was a person with high enlightenment and had spoken out the important points of the word “Heart”, Prajnadhara advised Da La: “The prince has already mastered all dharmas, so The prince should take the name Dat Ma, which means vast and well-versed. Since then, the third prince of Huong Chi nation took the name Bodhidharma.
Legend has it that on the anniversary of his grandfather’s death, Prajnadhara tested his intelligence. He understood everything the Patriarch asked, and the Patriarch was willing to accept him as his disciple.
After many years of practice, with his great intelligence and enlightenment, Bodhidharma was chosen by Prajnadhara as his successor. The story is told that, before transmitting the Dharma to Bodhidharma, the 27th Patriarch Prajnadhara called Bodhidharma to come and ask: “Of all things, what is formless?” Bodhidharma replied: “No birth, no form.” Prajnadhara asked again: “Of all things, what is the greatest?” Bodhidharma replied: “The greatest is Buddha Dharma.” After listening, Prajnadhara decided to choose Bodhidharma as his transmission, the 28th Patriarch of Buddhism.
Before Prajnadhara passed away, he advised Bodhidharma to travel around the world to spread the Dharma, learn about world affairs and enlighten people. That’s why right after his teacher passed away, Bodhidharma got on a boat and headed towards the East. From then on, he traveled throughout the world to enlighten humanity.
After becoming the 28th Patriarch, Bodhidharma sailed to South China in 520. After unsuccessfully preaching to Emperor Wu of Liang, Bodhidharma went to Luoyang and went to Shaolin Temple, on the Tung Son range. Here, Bodhidharma practiced meditation, facing the wall for 9 years without speaking; Also here, Hue Kha met Bodhidharma, leaving behind an immortal legend about his determination to study Buddhism.
Then, according to legend, the Patriarch crossed the Yangtze River in a small boat (the boat later became a subject of Zen painting), arriving at the Shaolin Temple in North China.
Bodhidharma is considered the founder and founder of the Shaolin martial arts sect. This martial art originates from the traditional Indian martial art Kalaripayattu, of which Bodhidharma was a master.
